A taste of home at Sylvia’s: Queen of Soul Food in Harlem, literally right down my street FINALLY 🙌🙌 #Harlem #lookatgod #wonthedoit
Meanwhile in New York…I pulled a coat from our client COS for a shoot in my first few days at my new job, and now it’s in Branché Magazine: from the editors of Marie Claire! #PR #COS #MarieClaire #Branché
Just moved into our new office at PR Consulting! Hope to make it full time soon 😉 #ilovemyjob #mybossesheads
I’ve been gone for too long…
Today I discovered that I quite literally live right down the street from Langston Hughes’ old home in Harlem, so of course the gay black man in me had to go see it. I still can’t believe I live in New York, let alone a neighborhood where I’ve written countless papers on, but this sight see takes the cake.
I first fell in love with Langston Hughes’ poetry in high school during my theatre career and would perform his poetry competitively. I fell in love again when I wrote my Senior research paper in college on the Harlem Renaissance which obviously featured Langston at the forefront, and I grew to admire him even more.
Langston has a poem titled ‘Let America Be America Again’ where he writes about the principle that the country was founded upon and how no one is equal, as he simultaneously yearns for equality within it. As I sat on his steps re-reading his poems, I couldn’t help but wonder what he would think of freedom today. I think he would be happy, although we have so far to go in this fight for equality, but because I’m able to be free as a black gay man and love who I want to love, I think he would appreciate this time.
I had my moment and of course had to take pictures, (oh hayyy selfie!) and I will definitely be visiting again since we’re practically neighbors.
"The free? Who said the free? Not me? Surely not me?" - Langston H.
(p.s. lack of wifi in the city of my dreams sucks, but I do miss writing like this. Hmmmmm.)
The Patriots. It’s been such a lovely Summer in the city with my girls Natalie and Sarah! #NewYork #Gramercy #rooftopparty #4thofJuly
